India Plans Integrated GOBARdhan Program to Boost Compressed Biogas Industry
NEW DELHI — The Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas has announced that it is drafting an integrated version of the GOBARdhan scheme to tackle persistent hurdles in the compressed biogas (CBG) sector. Officials say the revamped framework will focus on streamlining regulatory approvals, enhancing infrastructure for collection and processing of cattle dung, and providing financial incentives to encourage private investment.
The move aims to unlock the untapped potential of CBG as a clean‑energy source, helping India diversify its fuel mix and improve energy security. By converting agricultural waste into a transport‑grade gas, the initiative could also address rural waste‑management challenges while creating jobs in the countryside.
Stakeholders, including farm cooperatives and renewable‑energy firms, have welcomed the government's signal that it will address bottlenecks such as low feedstock availability and limited gas‑filling infrastructure. The integrated scheme is expected to be presented to the cabinet later this year, with implementation slated for the next financial cycle.
For the diaspora, the development signals new opportunities for investment and technology transfer in India's burgeoning green‑energy economy, as well as a step toward reducing the country's dependence on imported fossil fuels.
