Telangana Chief Minister Seeks IRFC Loans for Metro Expansion in Talks with Railways Minister
Hyderabad, June 23 – Telangana’s chief minister, A. Revanth Reddy, met with Union Railways Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw in New Delhi to discuss financing for Phase 2 of the city’s metro network. Reddy highlighted the need for additional funding to accelerate the project, which is expected to ease traffic congestion and improve connectivity across the rapidly growing metropolis.
The conversation centred on tapping loans from the Indian Railway Finance Corporation (IRFC), a government‑owned lender that traditionally finances railway infrastructure. By redirecting IRFC resources toward the metro, the state hopes to bridge a funding gap and keep the expansion on schedule.
For the South‑Asian diaspora, especially those with family or business ties to Hyderabad, the metro’s progress matters. Faster, reliable public transport can boost commerce, reduce commuting times for workers, and enhance the city’s appeal to investors and tech talent. The outcome of these high‑level talks could set a precedent for using railway‑related financing mechanisms for urban transit projects elsewhere in India.
Both officials expressed optimism that an agreement could be reached soon, underscoring the central government’s willingness to support infrastructure development in the state.
