A Richardson Father's Crime Against an Adopted Indian Child Ends in a Life Sentence
The tragic case of Sherin Mathews, which deeply shook both Richardson's community and South Asian diaspora networks across the country, has reached its legal conclusion — one that many hope brings a measure of justice for a child who deserved so much more.
⚖️ Life Sentence in the Sherin Mathews Case
A Texas court sentenced Wesley Mathews to life in prison after he pleaded guilty to a lesser charge of injury of a child by omission in connection with the death of his three-year-old adopted daughter, Sherin Mathews. The child, who had been adopted from India in 2016, was first reported missing from the family's Texas home in October 2017, setting off a large-scale search effort. Her body was later discovered in a drain entrance approximately two weeks after she was reported missing. During the trial, the prosecution argued that medical evidence contradicted Mathews's account that the child had accidentally choked, maintaining that he had caused her death and then concealed it. The girl's adoptive mother was separately cleared of child abandonment charges due to insufficient evidence. [5]
