A Political Awakening: How Edison and New Jersey's Indian Americans Shaped a Historic Election
The 2025 New Jersey governor's election marked an inflection point for the state's Indian American community, and nowhere was that shift more dramatic or more meaningful than in Edison.
🗳️ Edison's District 78 Leads a 107-Point Swing as Indian Americans Define Statewide Results
Mikie Sherrill made history by becoming only the second woman ever elected governor of New Jersey, but the deeper story of the 2025 election lies in the extraordinary mobilization of Indian American voters across the state. Nowhere was this more dramatic than in Edison's District 78 — the heart of the Indian shopping district along Oak Tree Road — where the precinct swung a stunning 107 points, going from a margin of plus-30 for one party to plus-76 for Sherrill. Middlesex County, home to the highest concentration of Indian Americans in the United States, recorded the largest increase in voter turnout in the state, rising 13 percent compared to the 2021 governor's race. Across the border in Parsippany, where Indian Americans make up more than a quarter of the population, Sherrill won by a 27-point margin, and first-time Gen Z candidate Diya Patel was simultaneously elected to the town council — a dual result that underscored how the community's political engagement is now producing concrete, history-making outcomes.
