Cricket is the heartbeat of Muscat's South Asian community, and the appointment of a new national captain is the kind of news that sparks conversations in every desi household, office and cricket ground across the city.
🏏 Vinayak Shukla Named Oman's New Cricket Captain
Oman Cricket has appointed 29-year-old wicketkeeper-batter Vinayak Shukla as its new national captain, with the leadership transition coming ahead of key fixtures including the ACC Men's Premier Cup and the final stage of the ICC Cricket World Cup League 2. Shukla, who made his international debut as recently as December 2024, has already compiled 312 ODI runs and 447 T20I runs across his early international career. He takes over from Jatinder Singh, Oman's all-time leading run-scorer with 3,626 international runs across white-ball formats, who guided the team to historic qualification for both the 2025 Asia Cup and the 2026 ICC Men's T20 World Cup. Oman currently sit fourth in the League 2 standings with 31 points from 28 matches, with the top four teams advancing to the final qualifying stage for the 2027 ICC Men's Cricket World Cup. Head coach Sulakshan Kulkarni praised Shukla's sharp cricketing brain and his unique vantage point as a wicketkeeper in reading the game. [5]
