Australia Establishes Permanent Consulate-General in Bengaluru to Boost South India Ties

Australia has officially opened a permanent Consulate‑General in Bengaluru, marking the first time the country will maintain a full‑time diplomatic mission in the Karnataka capital. The ceremony took place on Friday in the MFAR building on Cunningham Road, where Australia’s Assistant Minister presided over the inauguration. Both Australian and Indian officials said the new office is intended to deepen diplomatic, commercial and educational cooperation between Australia and the southern states of India.

The presence of a permanent consular mission is expected to make it easier for Indian students, professionals and tourists to access Australian services, and to encourage Australian businesses to explore opportunities in the fast‑growing tech and manufacturing hubs of Bengaluru and surrounding regions. For the South‑Asian diaspora, the consulate will also serve as a point of contact for cultural events and community initiatives that link the two nations.

The move follows a broader strategy by Canberra to expand its footprint in Asia, while New Delhi continues to diversify its international partnerships. The Bengaluru consulate joins existing Australian missions in New Delhi, Mumbai and Chennai, completing a network that covers the country’s major economic centres.
