APEDA launches first organic palmyra jaggery powder shipment from Tamil Nadu to Bulgaria

New Delhi, Oct 16 – The Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA) has cleared the way for the inaugural export of organic palmyra jaggery powder from Tamil Nadu. A total of 1.755 metric tonnes, certified under India’s National Programme for Organic Production (NPOP) and the European Union’s organic standards, has been dispatched to a buyer in Bulgaria.

The consignment marks the first time this traditional sweetener, derived from the sap of the palmyra palm, will leave Indian shores in a certified organic form. APEDA’s involvement underscores the agency’s push to open new markets for small‑scale Indian agri‑food producers, especially those in southern states where palmyra cultivation is prominent.

For the South‑Asian diaspora, the shipment signals a possible increase in the availability of authentic, organically‑grown ingredients that feature in many regional recipes. While the volume is modest, it could pave the way for larger, recurring exports, linking Tamil Nadu’s farmers with European consumers seeking natural sweeteners.

The export also highlights the growing demand for NPOP‑validated products in overseas markets, reflecting broader consumer trends toward traceable, sustainable food items.
