New Delhi, Aug 27 – Indian wildlife officials took part in a Russian‑Indian roundtable on snow leopard research and conservation on Wednesday, convened at Moscow’s AN Severtsov Institute of Ecology and Evolution. The meeting brought together scientists and policy‑makers from both nations to review ongoing studies, share data on leopard populations, and explore joint strategies for protecting the elusive big cat across its trans‑boundary habitat.
The snow leopard, a flagship species of the high‑altitude ecosystems stretching from the Himalayas to Central Asia, faces threats from habitat loss, poaching and climate change. By collaborating with Russian experts, India aims to strengthen monitoring programmes, improve anti‑poaching measures and secure funding for community‑based conservation projects in regions such as Ladakh, Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand.
