Aerial metro moves to feasibility stage as BJP-TMC clash follows Amit Shah rally in Durgapur

Durgapur is in the news this week for two contrasting reasons: the state government's push for an elevated metro corridor linking it to Asansol has entered the formal feasibility stage with RITES engaged to conduct the study, while a roadshow by BJP national leader Amit Shah was followed by an outbreak of violence between party workers that left two people injured.
🗳️ Asansol-Durgapur aerial metro enters feasibility study phase
The West Bengal government has taken its first concrete step toward building a proposed aerial metro corridor connecting Durgapur with neighbouring Asansol, by formally appointing RITES — the central government's railway and urban transport consultancy — to carry out a detailed feasibility study. Urban Development and Municipal Affairs Minister Agnimitra Paul announced the development following an administrative review meeting with the Asansol Durgapur Development Authority, where the progress of key urban infrastructure projects was assessed. The proposed metro corridor is intended to serve the twin-city agglomeration that ranks among eastern India's largest industrial and commercial clusters, providing a faster and more reliable public transport option while reducing pressure on the heavily congested road network between the two centres. Officials said RITES has already completed a preliminary survey of the route. Alongside the metro proposal, the state is advancing additional infrastructure plans for the region: these include a bridge over the Damodar River, an elevated road corridor with ramps at multiple points along the alignment, and a flyover connecting the two cities. Feasibility studies are underway for all these projects. The twin cities, long known as a steel-industry heartland anchored by facilities like the Durgapur Steel Plant, have been undergoing a broader modernisation push that now extends to urban mobility. Planners see improved inter-city transit as essential to unlocking the economic potential of the corridor and attracting new industry and skilled workers to the region. [7]
BJP and TMC workers clash in Durgapur after Amit Shah roadshow
Two persons were injured when a clash allegedly broke out between workers of the Bharatiya Janata Party and the Trinamool Congress in Durgapur, following a roadshow conducted by BJP senior leader and former Union Home Minister Amit Shah in the area. ANI reported the incident from Paschim Bardhaman district, noting that the injured were taken to hospital and said to be in stable condition. The incident follows a recurring pattern of political tension in the Asansol-Durgapur belt, which has periodically flared during high-profile visits by national leaders in the lead-up to West Bengal assembly elections. Both parties accused each other of initiating the violence. BJP alleged that TMC cadres attacked their supporters as they returned from the roadshow, while TMC countered that BJP workers provoked the confrontation. Local police were deployed to restore order and prevent further confrontations in the area. Durgapur sits in a region with a long history of industrial labour politics and competitive mobilisation between the left's historic presence, the TMC's current dominance, and the BJP's expanding organisational footprint in the steel belt. The city's working-class neighbourhoods have become a key battleground as both parties seek to consolidate their base ahead of the next assembly cycle. Political observers noted that high-decibel rallies by national figures from either party tend to heighten ground-level tensions among local cadres in the days that follow, requiring sustained police presence to prevent escalation.
