Faisalabad — Independence Day, Digital Transit, Kabaddi Gold

Faisalabad marked Pakistan's 79th Independence Day with city-wide ceremony before pivoting to the practical — announcing a digital public transport platform and electric vehicle battery-swapping network, while its kabaddi team claimed provincial glory and a Punjab Assembly privilege committee confronted senior officials over a failure to appear before the legislature.
🪔 Patriotic Fervour Marks Faisalabad's 79th Independence Day
Pakistan's 79th Independence Day was observed in Faisalabad with widespread ceremony and public enthusiasm. The main event took place at the Commissioner Complex, where the national flag was hoisted following a siren sounded at precisely 7:58 in the morning and a rendition of the national anthem. Faisalabad Commissioner Dr Imran Hamid Sheikh, Regional Police Officer Sohail Akhtar Sukhera, Deputy Commissioner Muhammad Nauman Siddique, and MPAs Raja Daniyal, Bilal Badar Chaudhry, and Uzma Raja were among senior officials and elected representatives who attended. Women Ombudsperson Dr Najma Afzal and traders' representative Haji Akram Ansari were also present. A Punjab Police contingent presented a formal salute, followed by a colourful march-past featuring Civil Defence volunteers, Boy Scouts, PERA Force, Motorbike Rescue 1122, the Suthra Punjab cleanliness programme, Parks and Horticulture Agency, WASA, Municipal Corporation, and Environmental Protection Agency teams. Students offered tableaus highlighting national unity, patriotism, and the founding spirit of Pakistan. Thousands of citizens — women, children, senior citizens, religious scholars, traders, and government employees — joined the celebrations carrying national flags, collectively reaffirming their commitment to the country's progress, prosperity, and sovereignty. 🏢 Digital Transport App and EV Battery Network Planned for Faisalabad
Faisalabad's divisional administration has unveiled plans to modernise public transport through a free smartphone application and an electric vehicle battery-swapping network. Commissioner Imran Hamid Sheikh, who also serves as president of the Faisalabad Urban Transport Society, said the Faisalabad Public Transport App would bring government and private transport services across all four districts of the division onto a single digital platform. Passengers will be able to track government buses, metro buses, electric buses, and registered urban Hiace vehicles in real time, with live data on vehicle locations, routes, and schedules. A built-in route planner will let commuters enter their destination and receive step-by-step guidance, including transfer points and estimated arrival times. Sheikh stressed that the app would be entirely free for riders; any regulatory requirements would apply to transport operators, not passengers. Vehicle operators are expected to begin digital registration through the platform within fifteen days to one month, with the system linked to the Punjab Information Technology Board. The commissioner described it as the first integrated digital public transport platform in Faisalabad and potentially in all of Punjab and Pakistan, intended to make daily commuting more efficient, transparent, and environmentally sustainable through a parallel EV battery-swapping network. 🎬 Faisalabad Division Lifts CM Punjab Kabaddi Trophy
Faisalabad Division has claimed the top prize at the CM Punjab Inter-Division Kabaddi Championship, defeating Sahiwal Division by a convincing score of 49 to 37 in the final held at Punjab Stadium in Lahore. The contest was a strong showcase of the traditional South Asian contact sport, with Faisalabad dominating throughout the match. In the third-place playoff, Lahore Division registered a solid 52 to 35 victory over Gujranwala Division. The prize distribution ceremony was presided over by Chairman of the Punjab Public Accounts Committee Chaudhry Iftikhar Hussain Chhachhar as chief guest, with Secretary Sports Punjab Fazalur Rehman and DG Sports Punjab Tariq Qureshi also in attendance. A total cash prize of Rs 500,000 was distributed among the top three teams: Faisalabad Division took home Rs 200,000 as champions, while the remaining prize money was distributed between the runners-up. The tournament brought divisions from across Punjab together in a competition that doubles as both a sporting event and a celebration of a game deeply embedded in the cultural life of the province. The kabaddi title adds a notable achievement to Faisalabad's growing list of sporting honours at the provincial level. [4]
🗳️ Punjab Assembly Panel Rebukes Officials Over Faisalabad Absences
A Punjab Assembly Privilege Committee meeting turned confrontational when a junior officer appeared in place of the Implementation and Coordination Secretary, who had been formally summoned to address the panel. The committee, chaired by MPA Samiullah Khan, expressed clear frustration at the substitution, which members viewed as disrespectful to the assembly's oversight authority. Attending MPAs included Ghazanfar Cheena, Asif Bha, Mian Tahir, Malik Ahmad Saeed, and Amjad Ali Javaid. The session grew more tense when MPA Ghazanfar Cheena specifically criticised Faisalabad's Regional Police Officer Sohail Sukhaira for allegedly showing disrespect to an elected representative — a charge that drew sharp reaction from committee members. The RPO's conduct was identified as falling short of the professional standards expected of senior civil servants in their dealings with the elected legislature. The episode shone a light on recurring concerns about accountability within Punjab's administrative and police structures, and about whether senior officials take parliamentary committees seriously as instruments of governance oversight. The committee's strong reaction signalled that elected members intend to press officials to appear personally and promptly when summoned, rather than delegating attendance to subordinates. [6]
