Indian National Charged in Alleged Fork Stabbing on Lufthansa Flight to Germany
The United States Department of Justice announced charges against Praneeth Kumar Usiripalli, a 28-year-old Indian national, for allegedly stabbing two teenage boys with a metal fork aboard a Lufthansa flight traveling from Chicago to Germany. According to the DOJ, the alleged stabbing occurred after meal service had concluded during the flight. The first victim — a 17-year-old boy who was lightly sleeping in a middle seat — allegedly awoke to find Usiripalli standing over him, at which point Usiripalli allegedly stabbed him in the shoulder area. Usiripalli then allegedly lunged toward a second 17-year-old boy seated in the middle seat of a center row and stabbed that teenager in the back of the head. When flight crew members attempted to restrain Usiripalli, the DOJ states that he formed the shape of a gun with his fingers, placed his hand to his mouth, and pulled an imaginary trigger. He then allegedly turned toward a female passenger and slapped her with his hand, and also allegedly attempted to slap a flight crew member. As a result of the incident, the Lufthansa flight was diverted to Boston Logan International Airport, where federal authorities took Usiripalli into custody. The DOJ noted that Usiripalli had previously been admitted to the United States on a student visa but no longer holds lawful immigration status in the country. He is charged with one count of assault with a dangerous weapon with intent to do bodily harm while traveling on an aircraft within the special aircraft jurisdiction of the United States, a federal charge that applies to offenses aboard aircraft operating in relevant jurisdictions. If convicted, Usiripalli faces a maximum sentence of up to ten years in federal prison.
