Gujarat Chief Minister Honors Vijayadashami with Traditional Weapon Worship at Official Residence

On October 20, Gujarat’s chief minister, Bhupendra Patel, observed the Hindu festival of Vijayadashami by performing a Shastra Puja at his official home in Gandhinagar. The ceremony, steeped in centuries‑old tradition, involves reverently offering prayers to weapons – a symbolic act that commemorates the triumph of righteousness over malevolence as celebrated in the epic narratives of the Ramayana and Mahabharata.

The event was marked by the presence of senior officials and a small gathering of family members, all dressed in festive attire. Patel’s participation underscores the practice among Indian political figures of publicly aligning with cultural rituals that resonate with a broad spectrum of the diaspora, reinforcing communal bonds and cultural continuity.

For South‑Asian communities abroad, such observances serve as a reminder of the living heritage that connects them to their roots, especially at a time when many are preparing to gather with relatives for the concluding day of the Durga Puja and Navratri celebrations. The chief minister’s act also highlights the state’s endorsement of traditional festivals, reflecting Gujarat’s broader commitment to preserving cultural identity while navigating modern governance.

The Shastra Puja concluded with a customary aarti, after which participants shared sweets and exchanged wishes for a prosperous year ahead.
