Medanta Plans 350-Bed Hospital as Ghaziabad Tackles Food Safety and Crime

Ghaziabad had a week that mixed big healthcare investment, municipal enforcement, festive dining, and a headline arrest that closed a long police chase.
🏢 Medanta Acquires Land for 350-Bed Ghaziabad Hospital
Global Health Group, the company behind the Medanta network, has acquired 10,560 square metres of land in Ghaziabad for Rs 165.82 crore, with plans to build a 350-bed hospital on the site. The move marks Medanta's first facility in the eastern Delhi-NCR corridor. CEO and Director Pankaj Sahni framed the investment as a long-term bet: "We see Ghaziabad as a compelling long-term healthcare opportunity. The region has undergone significant urban and economic development and continues to see increasing demand for advanced, specialised healthcare services." The company currently operates six hospitals in Gurgaon, Indore, Ranchi, Lucknow, Patna, and Noida, with 3,737 installed beds as of June 2026, and has five more hospitals in the pipeline across Mumbai, Delhi (Pitampura and South Delhi), Guwahati, and Varanasi. The Ghaziabad facility is intended to serve the broader eastern NCR market, which includes Meerut, Saharanpur, Hapur, Bulandshahr, and western UP — a large population that currently travels into Delhi or Noida for specialised care. 🗳️ Food Safety Teams to Enforce Sweet-Box Expiry Rules from October 15
The Food Safety Department in Ghaziabad district is rolling out strict enforcement of 'use by date' labelling on sweet boxes ahead of the festive season, with the new rules taking effect on October 15, 2026. Eighteen teams, each headed by a Food Safety Officer, have been formed and deployed across the district. The teams are visiting sweet shops, bakeries, and confectionery outlets, raising awareness about the mandatory date-marking requirement and warning sellers that non-compliance after the deadline will attract action. As part of the drive, food samples are also being collected from various establishments and sent for laboratory testing to check for adulteration or contamination. The campaign comes in the run-up to Navratri, Dussehra, and Diwali, when demand for sweets typically spikes and substandard products are more likely to reach consumers. Officials said the enforcement is part of a broader state-level push in Uttar Pradesh to improve food safety standards in the retail sector during the festival period. [2]
Wanted Criminal 'Nagin' Arrested After Encounter in Ghaziabad
A wanted criminal known by the alias 'Nagin', who had a police bounty of Rs 50,000 on his head, was arrested in Ghaziabad after a brief encounter on October 11, 2026. The arrest was carried out jointly by the Police Commissioner's office, the Crime Branch, and personnel from Link Road Police Station. The operation followed a tip-off about the suspect's location, and officers closed in on him before he could flee. According to Ghaziabad Police, Nagin had been evading capture for a significant period and was wanted in connection with multiple criminal cases. His arrest was credited to coordinated inter-unit intelligence sharing and planning. The Ghaziabad Police Commissioner confirmed the operation and noted that it formed part of a continued effort to bring high-value suspects to justice in the district. Local police shared details and an image from the arrest through official channels. The case is set to proceed through the criminal justice process, with investigators expected to file charges relating to the cases already registered against him. [1]
