Cash Seizure at Howrah Station and Religious Attacks on a Local Family Draw Attention

Howrah has been in focus on two distinct fronts in recent weeks: the Railway Protection Force arrested a man at Howrah station carrying Rs 67 lakh in undisclosed cash, and a Christian couple in the Amta area endured a series of violent attacks by groups demanding that they abandon their faith. The railway cash case has prompted a probe into the source and purpose of the funds, while the attacks on the couple have led to urgent calls for police protection and legal action. Taken together, the two incidents reflect the range of civic and security concerns that communities across Howrah district continue to face.
🗳️ RPF Arrests Maharashtra Man at Howrah Station Carrying Rs 67 Lakh in Cash
The Railway Protection Force detained a man from Maharashtra at Howrah railway station on September 21 after finding him in possession of Rs 67 lakh in cash, triggering a formal investigation into the source and purpose of the funds. The man reportedly told RPF personnel that he had brought the money to Kolkata with the intention of purchasing gold and silver, but this explanation was not accepted as sufficient by authorities, who launched a probe to verify his account. Under anti-money laundering and cash-carrying regulations, individuals transporting large sums without adequate documentation are subject to scrutiny by enforcement agencies, and the RPF referred the matter to relevant authorities following the initial detention. Howrah station is one of the country's busiest railway hubs, serving as a key transit point between eastern India and other regions, which makes it a significant site for enforcement operations. The case is being examined to determine whether any financial regulations were violated and whether the funds were connected to any unlawful activity. The man remained under scrutiny as investigators worked to establish the full picture of the circumstances surrounding the cash and his travel plans. Officials indicated that the probe would be conducted thoroughly and that findings would be shared with the appropriate agencies. [1]
🪔 Christian Couple in Amta Faces Violent Attacks and Pressure to Renounce Faith
Putul Manna and her husband Kanchan Manna, residents of Ghoraberia Dakshin Bhatora village in Amta, Howrah, faced three successive incidents of communal violence over consecutive days beginning September 16, according to reports. On the first occasion, a group of approximately 200 people entered their home and demanded that the couple adopt Hinduism, subjecting them to intense and sustained pressure. The following night, they were verbally abused and physically assaulted in front of their children. On September 17, a group of around 40 individuals returned, threw the family's belongings around, and attacked Putul physically—she was reportedly dragged by her hair and beaten. The group also attempted to pressure the couple into signing a document that would effectively have them disown their children. Following these events, Putul and Kanchan Manna approached the Bhatora Outpost under Joypur police station seeking to register a complaint and requesting police protection for themselves and their family. The incidents have drawn strong concern from Christian organisations and human rights groups, who have called for a prompt police response and for those responsible to be held accountable. Authorities have been urged to act with urgency to ensure the safety of the family and to send a clear message that such attacks will not go unpunished. [2]
