Cyclone Arnab Rains Batter Khammam, Halt Coal Mining and Disrupt Ganesh Festival

Khammam district faced a punishing few days as cyclone Arnab brought heavy rainfall that disrupted Ganesh immersion processions, halted coal production at Singareni Collieries Company Limited's opencast mines, and damaged standing crops. The chaotic conditions also contributed to a string of serious road accidents, including one that injured a police officer returning from immersion duty and another that killed a neurosurgeon on the Suryapet-Khammam highway.
🪔 Cyclonic Rains Batter Khammam During Ganesh Immersion Processions
Heavy rains triggered by cyclone Arnab lashed Khammam and Warangal districts during the peak of the Ganesh Chaturthi immersion period, creating difficult and at times dangerous conditions for devotees participating in processions and visarjan ceremonies. Telangana Today reported that strong cyclone-associated winds uprooted trees, damaged property, and snapped power lines across both districts, disrupting normal life. Despite the challenging weather, immersion processions continued in many parts of Khammam, with devotees braving the rain to complete the religious ritual. The cyclone-strength rains also inundated several water bodies in the region, forcing irrigation officials to lift gates at the Taliperu Project as inflows rose rapidly. Local administrations were placed on alert to manage flooding and to ensure that immersion processions were conducted safely near water bodies where access roads and ghats were partially submerged. The dual pressure of maintaining the religious calendar while managing a weather emergency tested civic preparedness across the district, and authorities deployed additional personnel at immersion sites to prevent accidents. SCCL Opencast Coal Production Halts as Rains Flood Khammam Mines
Widespread rains severely disrupted coal production at Singareni Collieries Company Limited opencast mines in the Sathupalli and Manuguru areas of Khammam district. Telangana Today reported that water accumulation in the open pits made mining operations impossible, forcing a halt to extraction activity. SCCL is one of Telangana's largest employers and a major coal supplier to thermal power stations, and its opencast operations are particularly vulnerable to heavy rainfall when pit dewatering becomes a critical challenge. The disruption also affected vehicular movement in the coal belt areas, where access roads were flooded or damaged. Standing crops in the surrounding agricultural areas suffered damage from prolonged inundation. Local irrigation officials monitored reservoir and tank levels in the region as heavy inflows continued throughout the rainfall period. The rainfall-induced production halt adds to operational pressures on SCCL, which manages coal output targets for Telangana's power sector and faces ongoing scrutiny over supply commitments to state electricity generators that depend on consistent coal availability. Police SI and Driver Hurt in Lorry Collision After Ganesh Immersion Duty
A Sub-Inspector and his driver sustained serious injuries when a speeding fish-laden lorry collided with their police patrol vehicle near Pindiprolu village in Tirumalayapalem mandal of Khammam district. The SI, identified as Kuchipudi Jagadish, and his driver Kothapalli Rakesh were returning from Ganesh immersion duty when the lorry, travelling from Khammam toward Maripeda Bungalow, rammed into their car. Both were taken to hospital for treatment. Telangana Today reported that the accident occurred as traffic on the highway was heavy due to immersion procession activity in the region. The collision raised fresh concerns about road safety on the Khammam-Warangal highway and the risks faced by law enforcement personnel engaged in public event duty during festivals. The lorry driver allegedly failed to maintain safe speed in conditions where visibility and road space were already compromised by ongoing Ganesh festival activity. Police registered a case and were investigating the accident, and the condition of the injured was being monitored at the hospital. [2]
Neurosurgeon Charred to Death After Car Catches Fire on Suryapet-Khammam Highway
A neurosurgeon was killed when his car collided with a road divider and subsequently caught fire on the Suryapet-Khammam highway. Both The New Indian Express and Deccan Chronicle reported the fatal accident, which involved the vehicle striking the median barrier and bursting into flames, leaving the occupant trapped inside the burning car. The doctor was charred beyond recognition before rescuers could reach the scene. The accident underscores the continuing toll of high-speed highway collisions on the roads connecting Khammam to other district centres in Telangana. The Suryapet-Khammam stretch has been the site of multiple fatal accidents in recent years due to a combination of factors including high vehicle speeds, inadequate lighting in rural stretches, and the prevalence of heavy commercial traffic. Authorities were informed and the body was sent for post-mortem examination. The incident drew widespread grief from Khammam's medical community, and doctors' associations reached out to the family of the deceased. Road safety campaigners have repeatedly called for better barriers and lighting on this stretch. [9]
