Kurnool Launches AP’s First Aviation Academy as New Rail Link Connects Coast and Rayalaseema

Two significant developments unfolded in Kurnool in late September 2026, with the inauguration of Andhra Pradesh’s first Flight Training Organisation marking the city’s arrival on India’s aviation map, while Indian Railways’ approval of a new express service promises greatly improved connectivity between the coastal districts and Rayalaseema.
🏢 Orient Flights Aviation Academy Inaugurated at Kurnool Airport
Kurnool’s aviation sector took a transformative step when Union Civil Aviation Minister Kinjarapu Ram Mohan Naidu formally inaugurated the Orient Flights Aviation Academy at Kurnool Airport on September 26, 2026, establishing Andhra Pradesh’s first officially recognized Flight Training Organisation. The facility, developed by the Hindustan Group at an investment of approximately Rs 100 crore, was built to comply fully with Directorate General of Civil Aviation norms, ensuring that training meets both national and international standards. At inauguration, the academy was equipped with three training aircraft, with concrete plans to expand the fleet to ten aircraft in the near term. Kurnool’s strategic geographic location and consistently favorable weather conditions make it a highly suitable year-round pilot training destination, factors that guided the original site selection. Officials stated that at full capacity the academy can train up to 60 pilots annually, while also generating employment in related sectors around the airport. Shortly after the coalition government took office, the state allocated 1.25 acres of land at Kurnool Airport to the Hindustan Group to begin construction. Minister Ram Mohan Naidu used the occasion to highlight the central government’s concerted effort to increase the number of Flight Training Organisations across India, noting that boosting domestic pilot training capacity is central to supporting the country’s fast-growing commercial aviation sector. For Kurnool, the academy represents both an educational asset and an economic anchor for the region. [5]
🏢 New Express Train to Bridge Machilipatnam and Kurnool City
Thousands of passengers travelling between Andhra Pradesh’s coastal districts and the Rayalaseema region are set to benefit from a newly approved express train connecting Machilipatnam and Kurnool City. Indian Railways gave formal clearance for the service, which will run approximately 499 kilometres via Vijayawada, Gudivada, and Nandyal, linking economically important towns spread across the state. The train will operate three days per week in each direction: Machilipatnam to Kurnool City runs on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Saturdays, departing at 4:55 pm and arriving the following morning at 5:45 am; the reverse direction serves Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Sundays, departing Kurnool at 9:30 am and reaching Machilipatnam by 9:35 pm the same evening. Commercial halts are scheduled at Gudivada, Vijayawada, Narasaraopet, Vinukonda, Donakonda, Markapur Road, Cumbum, Giddalur, Diguvametta, Nandyal, Bethamcherla, and Dhone. Officials noted that residents of Palnadu, Prakasam, Nandyal, and Kurnool districts will see meaningful improvements in connectivity for education, healthcare appointments, employment, and commerce. The timing of departures was deliberately designed to suit both overnight and daytime travellers, addressing the varying needs of a diverse ridership. The train number and fare details are yet to be announced ahead of the commercial launch of the service. [6]
