Indian Tricolor Parade Lights Up Madison Avenue in Dual Celebration of India’s 80th and U.S. 250th

On Sunday, August 16, the iconic stretch of Madison Avenue was transformed into a flowing river of saffron, white and green as the Federation of Indian Associations (FIA) of New York, New Jersey and Connecticut unfurled thousands of Indian flags.

The colourful spectacle marked two historic milestones: the 80th anniversary of India’s independence and the 250th anniversary of America’s own declaration of freedom. FIA members, local businesses and community groups worked together to drape the street’s sidewalks, storefronts and lampposts with the tricolour, creating a continuous visual tribute that drew the eyes of commuters and tourists alike.

Live performances – ranging from high‑energy bhangra to classical Indian dance and folk music – punctuated the day, turning the avenue into a lively cultural stage. Organisers highlighted the event as a chance to showcase the South‑Asian diaspora’s enduring contributions to New York’s social fabric while reinforcing shared values of liberty and diversity celebrated by both nations.

By weaving heritage into the city’s daily rhythm, the FIA hopes to inspire pride among younger generations and invite a broader audience to experience the vibrancy of the Desi community in the heart of Manhattan.
