Nagpur district has emerged as the undisputed leader in rooftop solar power adoption across Maharashtra under the Central Government's PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana scheme. A total of 1,01,815 consumers across the district have successfully installed rooftop solar power systems, accounting for 14.33 per cent of the 7,10,124 commissioned rooftop units across MSEDCL's state-wide jurisdiction. In terms of installed capacity, Nagpur contributes 391.51 MW out of Maharashtra's total of 2,690.26 MW, representing a 14.55 per cent share of the state's solar capacity. Within the district, the Nagpur city circle leads with 84,347 consumers and a combined installed capacity of 328.8 MW, while the rural circle has added 17,468 consumers contributing a further 64.61 MW to the grid. The Central Government provides direct subsidies to eligible consumers through bank transfers, with the initial capital investment typically recovered within three to four years through reduced electricity bills. Of the 1,01,815 solar consumers, 1,01,516 qualified for total subsidies worth Rs 760.85 crore, of which Rs 729.88 crore has already been credited directly to 93,651 consumer accounts. The Net Metering system allows surplus electricity generated beyond a household's own use to be fed back to MSEDCL via the grid, enabling consumers to receive credit toward future bills or direct financial compensation, effectively transforming ordinary households into active power producers.
