Navi Mumbai Raid Uncovers 8,442 Cartons of Relabelled Expired Snacks Worth Rs 75 Lakh
Food safety officials and police conducted a raid in Navi Mumbai that uncovered a large-scale operation relabelling expired food products and returning them to retail circulation. Investigators seized 8,442 cartons of altered products -- including popular brands of chips, puffed snacks and instant noodles -- valued at approximately Rs 75.52 lakh. The products had their original expiry date labels removed or covered and replaced with new dates, and in some cases nutrition information panels had also been altered. An FIR was registered at Turbhe police station under the Food Safety and Standards Act 2006 and relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. Navi Mumbai Municipal Commissioner Tukaram Mundhe described the tampering as a serious breach of public trust and called for swift prosecution. The discovery came amid a wider Maharashtra Food and Drug Administration crackdown on unsafe street food and substandard packaged goods, and authorities indicated further raids were planned in distribution hubs across the metropolitan region.
