Patna HC orders CBI probe into custodial disappearance of Sanoj Kumar
The Patna High Court has directed the Central Bureau of Investigation to take over the probe into the disappearance of Sanoj Kumar, a centring mason from Bhojpur district who went missing after being detained by Excise Police personnel on August 13, 2025 — exactly one year ago. According to the court, Sanoj telephoned his family from custody and reported that he had been detained near a Kali temple in the Bihiya police station area on suspicion of consuming liquor. A second call from him described police personnel beating him mercilessly before the line went dead. His father, Gauri Shankar Ram, filed a complaint at the police station when his son failed to return home. The police version — that Sanoj had jumped from a vehicle and fled during transit — was rejected by the court, which also noted that Sanoj's motorcycle was found abandoned at the location of the alleged detention. The court's order names multiple Excise Department officials, including Sub-Inspector Deeraj Kumar, ASI Raju Kumar, several Home Guards, and drivers whose conduct will now come under CBI scrutiny.
