Nine Rescued, Ten Still Missing After PCMC Waste-to-Energy Plant Collapses at Moshi
Nine people were rescued overnight from the debris of a collapsed waste-to-energy plant at Moshi in Pimpri-Chinchwad, following a highly technical operation conducted under difficult conditions. The plant is operated by the Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation and has served as the city's dumping ground since 1982, making it nearly 47 years old at the time of the collapse. State Disaster Management Minister Girish Mahajan, who visited and inspected the site, explained that continuous rain over two days caused accumulated garbage to shift like a landslide, bringing down half of a building constructed next to the plant. He stated that approximately 22 to 23 employees were inside when the structure gave way, with five managing to escape on their own immediately after the collapse. Search and rescue teams from the National Disaster Response Force, State Disaster Response Force, municipal administration, police, and medical personnel were working in coordination to locate and retrieve an estimated 10 to 12 people still believed to be trapped. Mahajan declared that preventing any further loss of life was the absolute priority and confirmed that instructions had been issued to ensure there were no delays of any kind in providing medical treatment to those injured in the accident.
