VYO-USA, the Vallabh Youth Organization, has advanced plans for a major new Hindu temple complex in Piscataway, scheduling a hearing before the Township's Zoning Board of Adjustment on September 28 to seek the variances required for the project. The proposal calls for demolishing existing dwellings at 460 and 464 Metlars Lane and erecting two new buildings on the combined 5.59-acre lot. The primary structure, at 32,005 square feet — roughly half the footprint of a regulation football field — is designed to contain the house of worship itself, a religious school, and a parsonage. A second building of 8,280 square feet would house a dining hall, a multi-purpose area, and administrative offices. VYO-USA, whose community motto is We Serve Happiness, belongs to the Vaishnav denomination of Hinduism. The project requires multiple variances from the Piscataway Township zoning code: the planned parking of 168 spaces falls short of the 240 spaces required by ordinance for a property of this size. The proposed building height of 46 feet — including decorative roof features — also exceeds standard limits and requires a separate variance, as does a proposed perimeter wall standing 9.5 feet high, topped by a 4-foot fence.
