World Gatka Federation Launches Inaugural International Championship in Texas

The World Gatka Federation marked a milestone on September 12 by staging its first International Virsa Sambhal Gatka Championship at the Gurdwara Sikh Sangat in Euless, Texas. Athletes, coaches, referees and community leaders from around the globe gathered to compete and celebrate the Sikh martial art of Gatka.

A day before the bouts, the federation ran a groundbreaking international refresher course for technical officials, aimed at harmonising officiating standards and competition rules worldwide. The event featured both individual and team contests, highlighting the fluidity and discipline inherent in traditional weapon‑based performances.

Organisers presented the championship as a cultural‑exchange platform, giving the diaspora a rare chance to witness and participate in a sport that embodies Sikh heritage. The officiating course signals a move toward formal governance of Gatka, potentially opening doors to larger multi‑sport festivals.
