25,000 Ring In Diwali at the Alameda County Fairgrounds

Tens of thousands of Bay Area residents gathered at the Alameda County Fairgrounds in Pleasanton to mark Diwali, the Festival of Lights, with fireworks lighting up the night sky. More than 25,000 people attended the celebration, which was organized by the Association of Indo Americans (AIA) with the help of over 150 dedicated volunteers. The event featured music, food, and fashion representing South Asian culture. Neha Agarwal, a Union City resident, said she attends every year to share the tradition with her children. "I love this celebration, because I have a lot of memories from India going to these kinds of events. I have two kids. I love to bring them here so that they can learn," she said. Sachin Syal described the festival as an opportunity for people of all backgrounds to discover South Asian culture. California Attorney General Rob Bonta was among the dignitaries present and framed Diwali's message of good over evil as especially meaningful in the current political climate, specifically citing federal challenges to immigrant communities.
