Prayagraj Ghats Flooded as Ganga and Yamuna Rise; Congress Readies Youth Convention

Monsoon rains have pushed the Ganga and Yamuna to the edge of Prayagraj's ghats, flooding riverside shops and prompting flood-response deployments across Uttar Pradesh even as the state records a 22 per cent rainfall deficit. Separately, the Congress party is mobilising youth in Prayagraj for a student convention led by Rahul Gandhi as part of a statewide campaign on paper leaks, unemployment, and recruitment delays.

Ganga and Yamuna Breach Prayagraj Ghats as IMD Issues Rain Alerts Across 33 UP Districts

The India Meteorological Department has placed 33 districts of Uttar Pradesh under rain alert as the monsoon season produces a patchwork of localised flooding and a broader rainfall deficit across the state. In Prayagraj, both the Ganga and the Yamuna have risen to the level of shops constructed along the ghats, disrupting commercial activity along the riverfront. The situation is similarly acute in Mathura, where the Yamuna is flowing in spate at 1.30 metres below the warning threshold and the steps of Keshi Ghat in Vrindavan are fully submerged. In Kanpur, the Ganga has risen by 20 centimetres, with water reaching the steps of Anandeshwar Temple Ghat. Ayodhya was struck by a storm at approximately 2 am on a Wednesday, accompanied by strong winds that caused road waterlogging, leaving devotees visiting the temple wading through knee-deep water on the Bhakti Path. The Ramganga in Bareilly and the Malan river in Bijnor are approaching danger-level thresholds, while riverbank erosion has begun along the Saryu and Ghaghara rivers in Ballia. Around 150 families in Bansdih have evacuated their homes and relocated to safer areas. Disaster response teams from the SDRF and NDRF have been deployed in flood-prone zones including Prayagraj as a precautionary measure, with continuous monitoring of river levels under way. Despite the localised flooding, the overall monsoon picture for Uttar Pradesh is one of significant shortfall. Dry winds originating from Pakistan have dispersed rain-bearing clouds from roughly 80 per cent of the state, leaving most districts with little or no rainfall. On the Tuesday before the alert was issued, only 11 cities recorded any rainfall at all, with the state receiving just 1.5 millimetres against an expected average of 9.7 millimetres for the day. Between June 1 and July 14, Uttar Pradesh received a cumulative 163.1 millimetres of rainfall, representing a 22 per cent shortfall below the seasonal average. The Prayagraj convention follows an earlier event in Kota, Rajasthan, where Gandhi held a public interaction with students facing pressures from examination systems and government recruitment processes. The party has appointed Anil Yadav, Uttar Pradesh general secretary, as the official coordinator for the Prayagraj convention, charging him with overseeing a month-long mobilisation effort across the city. The campaign is framed around four recurring grievances among Uttar Pradesh's student population: paper leaks in competitive examinations, prolonged delays in government recruitment notifications and selections, high youth unemployment, and inadequate access to quality higher education. To build momentum, Congress workers are being sent across Prayagraj to organise nukkad sabhas, perform street theatre, distribute pamphlets, lead torchlight marches, and hold structured meetings with students, teachers, and civil society organisations. A missed-call campaign allows students to register their participation in the convention. Party leaders have emphasised Prayagraj's historical standing as a centre of student politics and civil society activism in Uttar Pradesh, arguing that the city is a natural venue for mobilising youth around democratic issues. Anil Yadav told The Indian Express that students associate Gandhi with a willingness to speak directly to their concerns, including paper leaks and job shortages. The Congress also plans to involve students affiliated with other political organisations, former student union leaders, and university academics. Similar conventions are planned in Patna and Delhi later in July, part of a broader national youth outreach strategy that the party hopes will translate student discontent into electoral support.
