The Indian Hotels Company Limited, the Tata group's flagship hospitality company and India's largest, announced on August 6, 2026 the signing of a Gateway hotel in Raipur, Chhattisgarh, in a greenfield partnership with KLA Group, promoted by Mr. Kanhaya Lal Agrawal. The 151-key Gateway Raipur will feature an all-day dining restaurant, a specialty restaurant, and a bar, along with a fully equipped gym, a swimming pool, and a spa. Banqueting facilities will span more than 10,000 square feet, with additional meeting rooms for conferences and social events. Suma Venkatesh, IHCL's Executive Vice President for Real Estate and Development, said Raipur had emerged as one of central India's important economic centres, driven by industrial expansion, infrastructure development, and the city's growing role as an administrative and educational hub. Mr. Agrawal, whose KLA Group was established in 2002 and has built a substantial presence in road infrastructure projects for central and state government agencies, said Raipur continues to show strong economic and social growth. Activists Demand Release of Chhattisgarh Christian Forum Leader Arrested in Raipur
A coalition of activists working on religious freedom, minority rights, and civil liberties issued a statement calling for the immediate release of Arun Pannalal, president of the Chhattisgarh Christian Forum, following his arrest in Raipur and remand to judicial custody. According to the statement, Pannalal was arrested from his residence late on August 7, 2026 after police entered his home and took him into custody; he was remanded to judicial custody the following day, August 8. The arrest reportedly took place while Bajrang Dal members had gathered outside his residence in protest, with a heavy police presence also deployed at the location. Pannalal has been a longstanding advocate on issues of religious freedom, anti-conversion legislation, and the rights of Christians in Chhattisgarh, and the activists described him as a consistent critic of what they characterised as communal targeting of minorities in the state. The case originated from a complaint filed by BJP spokesperson Amit Chimnani over an alleged comment attributed to Pannalal on a Facebook post concerning Lord Shiva. He has reportedly been booked under provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita relating to the promotion of enmity between groups, deliberate acts intended to outrage religious feelings, and intentional insult aimed at provoking a breach of peace.
