Chicago’s Indian Federation Marks U.S. Bicentennial and India’s 80‑Year Freedom Milestone in Schaumburg

On August 9, the Federation of Indian Associations‑Chicago (FIA‑Chicago) hosted a vibrant gathering of more than 800 participants at the Renaissance Convention Center in Schaumburg, Illinois. The daylong program honored two historic benchmarks: the United States’ 250th anniversary of independence and India’s 80th year of freedom.
Community members, elected officials, business leaders and a roster of performers took part in a series of patriotic rites and cultural showcases that highlighted the shared values of democracy, entrepreneurship and heritage. Highlights included a flag‑raising ceremony, speeches from local politicians, and a colorful lineup of music, dance and folk presentations from across the sub‑continent.
Organisers described the event as a bridge‑building effort, reinforcing the ties that bind the South‑Asian diaspora to both their adopted home and their ancestral nation. By spotlighting the dual celebrations, FIA‑Chicago aimed to inspire younger generations to engage civically, support local enterprises and preserve cultural traditions.
The gathering underscored the growing influence of South‑Asian voices in the Midwest’s civic and economic landscape, reminding attendees that the spirit of independence—whether American or Indian—continues to resonate in the everyday lives of the diaspora.
