🪔 Rabindra Sangha Marks Durga Puja with 'Aami' Theme on Parental Separation
Rabindra Sangha in Siliguri chose the theme 'Aami' — meaning 'self' or 'I' — for its Durga Puja pandal during the 2026 festival season. The cultural organisation's installation was designed to highlight the impact of parental separation on children, raising awareness about a social issue affecting families in West Bengal. ANI reported the pandal on October 10, 2026, with photographs of the installation, noting the choice of a socially conscious theme over conventional decorative or mythological pandal designs. By centring its Durga Puja observance on the experiences of children caught in parental separation, Rabindra Sangha joined a tradition of using the festival as a platform for social messaging in Siliguri. Durga Puja pandals in West Bengal frequently engage with contemporary social issues alongside their religious celebrations, and the 'Aami' theme continued that tradition. The choice of 'Aami' as a theme invites visitors to reflect on the emotional experience of children navigating family separation, giving the festival a reflective and community-centred quality distinct from more decorative themed pandals. Two Dead in Mob Violence Over Suspected Cattle Smuggling Near Siliguri
Two people were killed and two more injured in mob violence near Siliguri, West Bengal, in an incident linked to suspicions of cattle smuggling, according to The New Indian Express. The report, filed by journalist Subhendu Maiti and published on October 3, 2026, described locals alleging that cattle were being transported in trucks through the Naxalbari, Bagdogra, and Matigara areas near Siliguri over the preceding few days. The mob attack highlighted ongoing tensions in rural communities around Siliguri over cattle smuggling activity near West Bengal's northern border zone. The Naxalbari, Bagdogra, and Matigara areas mentioned in the report all lie in the Darjeeling and Siliguri districts, making this a localised incident with broader implications for law and order in the region. The incident drew attention to the practice of local communities taking vigilante action against those suspected of cattle smuggling. Cattle-related mob violence has been a recurring concern in several parts of West Bengal, and the October 2026 Siliguri incident added to those reports. [6]
