Centre Proposes Bundling Tiruchirappalli Airport with Tirupati for Privatisation

The central government has proposed privatising Tiruchirappalli airport by bundling it with Tirupati airport under a combined model. The Airport Authority of India issued a Request for Expression of Interest to modernise both airports, upgrade infrastructure and boost revenue through commercial development. The bundling approach pairs Tiruchirappalli with Tirupati, which handles substantial pilgrimage-related traffic, with the aim of making the combined package more attractive to private investors. The arrangement is expected to attract fresh investment, enhance operational efficiency and accelerate commercial development at both airports. Tiruchirappalli serves as an important air hub for central Tamil Nadu and handles traffic linked to both business travel and religious tourism, given its proximity to major temples including the Rockfort Temple and Sri Ranganathaswamy Temple at Srirangam. The privatisation proposal forms part of a broader central government push to bring commercial management to regional airports historically operated by the AAI. Officials indicated the bundled arrangement could strengthen the long-term development outlook for both airports by giving a private operator the scale and traffic mix needed to justify significant capital investment in improvements. Bus Overturns on Chennai-Tiruchirappalli Highway, About 20 Injured

A passenger bus travelling from Chennai to Madurai overturned in a ditch near Paathur on the Chennai-Tiruchirappalli National Highway on Monday, October 5, 2026. Approximately 20 passengers sustained injuries in the accident. A woman trapped inside the overturned vehicle was freed after a three-hour rescue operation carried out by emergency personnel and local authorities. All those injured were taken to Ulundurpet Government Hospital for treatment. The accident halted traffic on the busy national highway for approximately two hours before the stretch was cleared. Thirunavalur police registered a case and opened an inquiry into the cause of the accident. The Chennai-Tiruchirappalli highway is one of the principal road corridors in Tamil Nadu, connecting the state capital with central and southern destinations and carrying heavy commercial and passenger traffic on a daily basis. Investigators were examining whether driver error, vehicle failure or road conditions contributed to the incident. The report was filed with inputs from PTI. The accident highlighted the continuing challenges of road safety on high-traffic national highway stretches in Tamil Nadu, where accidents involving buses and commercial vehicles remain a recurring concern.
