Tens of thousands of Bay Area residents, including families from Union City, gathered at the Alameda County Fairgrounds in Pleasanton for a Diwali celebration featuring fireworks, music, food, and community festivities, ABC7 Bay Area reported. The celebration was organized by the Association of Indo Americans with the support of more than 150 dedicated volunteers, and drew over 25,000 attendees from across the region. Neha Agarwal, a Union City resident who attended with her children, told ABC7: 'I love this celebration, because I have a lot of memories from India going to these kinds of events. I have two kids. I love to bring them here so that they can learn.' California Attorney General Rob Bonta was among the notable attendees at the event. Fremont Mayor Raj Salwan, who is of Indian descent and grew up in the East Bay, spoke at the gathering about the significance of Diwali for the South Asian community. 'It legitimizes the South Asian community as a solid community in our area,' Salwan said. 'They have much to contribute. They want to give back.' According to Hindu tradition, Diwali commemorates the return of the god Ram from exile and is a celebration of light over darkness and knowledge over ignorance. Sachin Syal said the celebration offered a way for the broader public to learn about the local South Asian community, and the event included music, food, and fashion representing South Asian cultures.
