Andhra Governor Proposes Buddhist Studies Center at Acharya Nagarjuna University During Golden Jubilee

Vijayawada, Sept 11 – While commemorating the golden jubilee of Acharya Nagarjuna University (ANU), Andhra Pradesh Governor and university chancellor S. Abdul Nazeer announced plans to create a dedicated Centre of Buddhist Studies on campus. He described the initiative as a fitting homage to the university’s namesake, the ancient philosopher‑scholar Acharya Nagarjuna, whose teachings continue to influence Buddhist thought across South Asia.

The proposal, unveiled during the jubilee celebrations, underscores the state’s intention to deepen scholarly engagement with Buddhist heritage, an area of growing interest among academics and the wider Desi diaspora. If realised, the centre could serve as a hub for research, language programmes and cultural exchanges, potentially attracting students and scholars from India and abroad.

Local officials indicated that feasibility studies and funding mechanisms are being explored, with the aim of integrating the centre into ANU’s existing departments. The move aligns with broader efforts in Andhra Pradesh to promote higher education and preserve regional philosophical traditions.

The diaspora community has welcomed the suggestion, viewing it as an opportunity to strengthen ties with their cultural roots and to foster future collaborations in Buddhist studies.
