Brampton Gurdwaras Named in Raj Grewal $15M Loan Lawsuit as Tamil Memorial Vandal Charged

Brampton's South Asian community confronts a difficult period: a former MP's deepening financial crisis has drawn two prominent gurdwaras into court over a $15 million loan, Canada's national police force has issued rare life-threat warnings to Khalistan activists in the region, and a hate crime investigation has concluded with charges after the city's Tamil Genocide Memorial was spray-painted with derogatory messages.

🗳️ Former MP Raj Grewal Sued Over $15M Gurdwara-Secured Loans

Former Brampton Member of Parliament and Mississauga-based lawyer Raj Grewal has been sued in a case involving two prominent GTA gurdwaras used as collateral for a $15 million loan. The Sikh Spiritual Centre Toronto, commonly known as the Etobicoke Gurdwara, and Brampton's Nanaksar Gurdwara are both named as defendants in the lawsuit, along with Amarjit Singh Deol, who serves as president of both institutions, and Gurmail Singh Nirman, treasurer and director of the Sikh Spiritual Centre Toronto. The lawsuit was filed September 4 by two Hamilton-based private lenders, SSMT Management Inc. and Oculus Mortgage GP Inc., both connected to Grewal through prior real estate and mortgage dealings. Court documents indicate that Grewal, companies he controlled, and family members tied to his real estate transactions were more than $200 million in debt when the two gurdwaras were pledged as security for the loan. The loan carried a 24 percent annual interest rate, requiring $300,000 in monthly interest-only payments, and more than $1.5 million in interest has gone unpaid since May. Grewal is held responsible for the entire loan amount plus all missed payments. He and his law firm RSG Law collectively face approximately two dozen lawsuits. In a related development, roughly $6 million in counterfeit cheques were deposited by a lawyer working at RSG Law, after which a $250,000 wire transfer was made from RSG's trust account to the RBC bank account of the Sikh Spiritual Centre Toronto on April 14. 🤝 RCMP Issues Life-Threat Warnings to Sikh Activists in Ontario and B.C.

Canada's RCMP has issued formal duty-to-warn letters to at least two Sikh activists in Ontario and British Columbia, informing them of credible, serious and imminent threats to their lives. The notices were delivered to Inderjeet Singh Gosal of Caledon, Ontario, and Manjinder Singh of Abbotsford, British Columbia. Both men are identified as targets because of their involvement in efforts to establish an independent Sikh state in India. The warning documents, obtained by The Canadian Press, state that while no specific threat exists against their family members or friends, those close to them could be harmed during any attempt on the activists' lives. The RCMP could not disclose further details about the nature of the threats beyond the contents of the formal notices. The disclosures come amid continued Khalistan activism visible across Canada's South Asian communities. A protest in support of Khalistan was held outside the Triveni Mandir Hindu temple in Brampton on April 5, 2026, reflecting the active presence of the movement in the Greater Toronto Area. The CP24 report, filed on August 18, 2026, indicated the warnings were issued to at least two individuals, suggesting the RCMP may have notified others as well. [3]

Teen Charged in Hate Crime After Brampton Tamil Genocide Memorial Defaced

A 14-year-old boy from Brampton has been arrested and charged after the Tamil Genocide Memorial at Chinguacousy Park was spray-painted with derogatory messages, in a case Peel Regional Police are investigating as a hate crime. Police received reports of the vandalism on March 20 and made an arrest on March 31, charging the youth with two counts of mischief over $5,000. Under the Youth Criminal Justice Act, the boy's identity cannot be released publicly, and he is required to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice at a later date. The Tamil Genocide Memorial, which honours victims of the genocide in Sri Lanka, was unveiled at Brampton's Chinguacousy Park in May 2025. Peel Regional Police Chief Nishan Duraiappah condemned the incident in a public statement, saying, 'Peel Regional Police will not tolerate vandalism — especially hate-motivated crimes of spaces that are meaningful to our communities.' Chief Duraiappah further stated that people across the Peel region have the right to feel safe in public spaces. The CBC News report noted that the case had been filed as a hate crimes investigation by Peel Regional Police. [5]
