A senior Liberal government official’s assertion that India’s government has stopped orchestrating violence against Canadians sparked immediate pushback from Sikh communities in Brampton and across Canada, with Foreign Affairs Minister Anita Anand declining to repeat the claim even as she departed for India alongside PM Carney.

An unnamed senior Liberal government official told reporters the day before Prime Minister Mark Carney departed for India that Ottawa believed the BJP government in New Delhi was no longer orchestrating violent crimes against Canadian citizens on Canadian soil. The claim provoked immediate and sharp criticism from experts, politicians and community activists in Brampton and across Canada who argued the statement simply does not add up, directly contradicting recent Canadian intelligence assessments and firsthand accounts from citizens who had received official “duty to warn” notices from police as recently as the Sunday before the statement was made.
Foreign Affairs Minister Anita Anand offered a sharply different narrative when she spoke with CBC journalist Rosemary Barton — making no claim whatsoever that Indian transnational repression in Canada had stopped. When asked directly whether the government still believed agents of India were involved in extortion and threats of violence, Anand replied: “No country will ever have a pass in terms of the domestic safety and security of Canada, period. The rule of law and the importance of adherence to the Criminal Code are of utmost importance to our government, period.” She confirmed law enforcement dialogue between both countries has already begun and “will continue in 2026 and beyond,” and said the government must remain “at the table to raise the concerns relating to transnational repression.”
