Tamil Nadu Sets Up Expert Committee to Track El Niño Effects and Recommend Safeguards

Chennai – On July 30, the Tamil Nadu government announced the formation of a high‑level expert committee tasked with monitoring the developing El Niño phenomenon and advising the state on preventive actions. The panel, convened at the direction of Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay, will bring together climatologists, agricultural specialists, water‑resource engineers and other relevant authorities to assess potential disruptions to monsoon patterns, crop yields and water availability.

The move comes as El Niño‑related anomalies have begun to surface across South‑Asia, prompting concerns over drought in inland districts and heightened flood risk along the coast.
