India pledges full assistance to Japan after Kumamoto quake, says Defence Minister

New Delhi – On Thursday, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh told Japanese officials that India stands ready to extend all necessary relief and support following the recent earthquake in Kumamoto. Singh’s assurance came during a bilateral discussion, emphasizing that India will coordinate with Tokyo to provide the resources and expertise required for rescue and recovery operations.
The commitment reflects the deepening strategic and people‑to‑people ties between the two nations, a point of particular interest for the South‑Asian diaspora in Japan and the wider Indo‑Japanese community. Many Desi professionals, students and labour migrants reside in Japan, and stronger cooperation on disaster response can directly affect their safety and mobility.
While details of the assistance package were not disclosed, Singh’s statement signals a proactive stance, confirming that India will mobilise both governmental and non‑governmental channels to aid the affected regions. The move also underscores India’s broader foreign‑policy focus on solidarity with neighboring Asian countries during emergencies.
The Kumamoto earthquake has prompted a wave of international goodwill, and India’s pledge adds to the collective effort aimed at rebuilding infrastructure, restoring livelihoods and ensuring the well‑being of those impacted.
