India’s defence chief pledges full aid to Japan after Kumamoto quake

India’s defence minister Rajnath Singh on Thursday reiterated New Delhi’s pledge to assist Japan following the powerful earthquake that struck Kumamoto prefecture. He said India stands ready to provide “all required assistance, relief and support” to the Japanese government.
The statement was made during a press briefing in New Delhi, underscoring the long‑standing security and disaster‑relief cooperation between the two nations. While specifics of the aid package were not disclosed, India has previously dispatched medical teams and equipment to foreign disasters, suggesting similar resources could be mobilised for Kumamoto.
For the South‑Asian diaspora in Japan and abroad, the promise signals a continuation of the bilateral goodwill that often translates into on‑ground assistance for Indian nationals living in Japan and for joint humanitarian projects. It also reinforces the broader India‑Japan strategic partnership, which includes defence, technology and infrastructure collaborations.
Observers note that swift, coordinated assistance could help accelerate rescue operations and reconstruction, while reinforcing the message that India remains a reliable partner in regional crisis response.
