The India Meteorological Department forecast heavy to very heavy rainfall across Maharashtra through 30 July, with Nagpur's Vidarbha region placed under an elevated alert, Nagpur Today reported. The southwest monsoon has become active again due to a low-pressure system that has developed over the Bay of Bengal, prompting authorities to advise residents, farmers, and tourists to remain alert across the state. Gondia, Chandrapur, and Gadchiroli districts in Vidarbha are under an Orange Alert on 29 July, with Chandrapur maintaining the Orange Alert on 30 July due to the possibility of very heavy rainfall. Strong winds ranging from 40 to 50 km/h, with gusts up to 60 km/h, accompanied by lightning and thunderstorms, are forecast for parts of Vidarbha and Marathwada. In coastal Maharashtra, a Yellow Alert has been issued from 28 to 31 July for Raigad, Ratnagiri, and Sindhudurg districts, as well as the ghat sections of Pune, Satara, and Kolhapur. Continuous rainfall may trigger landslides, overflowing rivers and streams, and waterlogging in low-lying areas, the report warned, urging residents across the affected regions to take precautions and avoid unnecessary travel during peak rainfall periods. Maharashtra has recorded the highest number of Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprise closures in the country over the past three financial years, even while retaining its position as India's top state for new MSME registrations, Nagpur Today reported. Data tabled in the Rajya Sabha by Union MSME Minister Jitan Ram Manjhi shows 28,764 MSME units in Maharashtra shut down between 2023-24 and 2025-26, the highest figure nationally. Nagpur district saw a steady rise in closures, registering 1,425 shutdowns over five years. Across India, 121,805 MSME units closed during the three-year period despite the registration of more than 63.81 million new enterprises, pointing to the significant attrition facing small businesses even in a high-growth registration environment. Maharashtra simultaneously registered 7,557,276 new MSMEs in the same period, maintaining its lead in new enterprise creation. The combination of top rankings in both new registrations and closures reflects a high rate of business churn in the state.
