Kalyan-Dombivli: Sena corporator Mhatre absconding after hospital assault; KDMC coalition reshuffled

Kalyan-Dombivli is facing two overlapping crises: Shiv Sena corporator Ramesh Mhatre remains absconding after three of his associates were arrested for assaulting medical staff at a municipal hospital, drawing condemnation from Maharashtra's government. Separately, the municipal council's political landscape has been upended by a Shinde Sena and MNS alliance that derailed the BJP's bid to control the Kalyan-Dombivli Municipal Corporation's mayor's seat.
Three arrested in KDMC hospital assault; Sena corporator Mhatre remains absconding
Three associates of Shiv Sena corporator Ramesh Mhatre were arrested in connection with the assault on medical staff at a Thane-district hospital, but Mhatre himself and at least one other accused remained absconding after the incident. The case drew state-level attention, with a Maharashtra minister responding publicly to the violence and declaring that disputes of any kind cannot justify a physical assault, particularly inside a healthcare facility. Mhatre is a Shiv Sena corporator whose associates are alleged to have entered the hospital and attacked doctors and staff. The hospital is part of the Kalyan-Dombivli Municipal Corporation and serves a large population in the twin-city region. The assault sparked protests and calls from the medical community for stronger legal protections and assurances that political actors cannot enter hospitals and physically intimidate healthcare workers. The Indian Medical Association called for action, and the police indicated that efforts to locate and apprehend the absconding accused, including Mhatre, were ongoing. The minister's statement signalled that the state was watching the case closely and expected the full force of law to apply regardless of the political affiliation of those involved in the attack. 🗳️ Shinde Sena and MNS join hands in KDMC, blocking BJP path to mayor's seat
Politics in the Kalyan-Dombivli Municipal Corporation heated up after no single party secured a clear majority, creating space for coalition maneuvering. An alliance was formed between Eknath Shinde's Shiv Sena faction and Raj Thackeray's Maharashtra Navnirman Sena, combining 53 corporators from the Shinde group with 5 corporators from the MNS. The alliance became public when all 58 corporators from the two parties arrived together at the Konkan Divisional Commissioner's office for group registration. Photographs of a meeting between Member of Parliament Shrikant Shinde and MNS leader Raju Patil circulated widely on social media and confirmed the political coming-together. Shrikant Shinde stated publicly that his group would welcome any party that comes forward for development. Electing a mayor in Kalyan-Dombivli requires the support of 62 corporators, meaning the combined Shinde Sena-MNS bloc of 58 still falls four seats short of an outright majority but represents a dominant position in the fragmented council. The alliance directly derailed BJP's own bid to secure the mayor's post, reshaping the municipal political balance and raising questions about future alliances and whether any other parties or independent corporators might join or break ranks before the mayoral vote.
