Patient Loses Toe to Rat Bite in Tiruchirappalli Government Hospital Ward
A 70-year-old woman named R Tamilkodi, a resident of Alathur near Kalkandarkottai, lost part of her left big toe at Mahatma Gandhi Memorial Government Hospital in Tiruchirappalli when rats in the post-operative ward bit her while she was recovering from ankle surgery. Tamilkodi had been admitted following an injury to her left ankle sustained in a fall on July 20 and had undergone surgery for that injury. On Thursday July 23, her son Vijayakumar arrived at the ward to bring her tea and discovered that rats had bitten off part of her left big toe. Because she is diabetic, she had no sensation of the bite and was entirely unaware it had occurred. Vijayakumar told reporters he had previously noticed rats in the ward and warned hospital staff, but said no action was taken on that earlier complaint. After he reported the July 23 incident, the hospital medical team examined the wound, cleaned it, and administered tetanus and other preventive vaccines. A hospital official confirmed that her vital signs remained stable and that she had not suffered serious side effects. The administration also undertook rodent-control measures following the incident. Seminarian Found Dead at Tiruchirappalli Church, Police Register Unnatural Death Case
A 29-year-old man preparing for the Catholic priesthood was found dead at a church in Tiruchirappalli on the morning of July 10, 2026, prompting police to register a case of unnatural death and launch an investigation. Justin Prabakaran, a native of Amirpalayam in Virudhunagar district, was discovered unresponsive in a room at Jeganmadha Church near K.K. Nagar in the city. He had been undergoing priestly formation for eight years, completing different stages of training in Kolkata, Bengaluru, and Chennai. Justin had recently travelled to Tiruchirappalli specifically to complete a routine medical examination required as part of his formation programme. Those familiar with him noted that he had appeared emotionally distressed during this period. After the medical examination, he travelled briefly to Bengaluru before returning to Tiruchirappalli on Tuesday night. Church personnel discovered him unresponsive in his room at around five in the morning on Wednesday and informed the authorities. Officers from K.K. Nagar Police Station shifted the body to the Government Hospital in Tiruchirappalli for a post-mortem examination. Following the autopsy, the body was handed over to his family and to church representatives for the funeral. Police registered the case of unnatural death following a complaint filed by A.
