R Tamilkodi, a resident of Alathur near Kalkandarkottai, had been admitted to the hospital after sustaining an injury to her left ankle in a fall on July 20 and subsequently underwent surgery. The incident came to light when her son Vijayakumar arrived at the ward on a Thursday morning to bring her tea and discovered that rats had bitten off a portion of her left big toe while she lay recovering. He told the Deccan Herald that he had noticed rats in the ward on prior visits but had not anticipated such a severe outcome. Hospital officials confirmed the incident and stated that medical staff promptly examined the wound, cleaned it thoroughly, and administered tetanus toxoid along with other preventive vaccines to the patient. A hospital official added that her vital signs and overall health remained stable following the incident and that she had not experienced any serious side effects.
