Ahmedabad Crime Branch Arrests 24-Year Murder Fugitive as City Marks Ganeshotsav
The Ahmedabad Crime Branch closed a case two decades in the making, arresting a land broker wanted since 2002 in a Rajasthan murder case after 24 years of evasion across Gujarat. The city was also marked by festive activities as Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel attended Ganeshotsav celebrations in Maninagar and addressed young entrepreneurs at a Youth Dialogue Programme on the same day.
24-Year Fugitive Caught in Vejalpur
The Ahmedabad Crime Branch arrested Dinesh Desai, a land broker, after he had been absconding for nearly 24 years in connection with a murder case registered at Sadri police station in Pali district, Rajasthan. According to the Crime Branch, the case dates back to 2002, when a family property dispute was underway in Dungli village under that police station's jurisdiction. Police allege that Desai and his associates plotted the killing of Dalaram Nai: when Nai was travelling on a motorcycle, a car allegedly rammed into him from behind, causing his death. Three other accused in the case had already been arrested in earlier years, while Desai alone remained at large for nearly 24 years. After the alleged murder, Desai reportedly fled to his native Kankrej area in Banaskantha district. When police began closing in on him there, he relocated, reportedly changing identities and moving through multiple locations across Gujarat to avoid detection. He was eventually tracked down and apprehended in the Vejalpur area of Ahmedabad by the Crime Branch, which had been coordinating the search across Gujarat and with Rajasthan authorities. [4]

Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel attended Ganeshotsav celebrations at Daxini Society in Maninagar, Ahmedabad, offering prayers to Lord Ganesha and performing aarti, praying for the happiness, peace, and prosperity of the people of Gujarat. The pandal reverberated with chants of Ganpati Bappa Morya as the CM joined organisers, local leaders, and residents for the festivities. Among those present were Mayor Hitesh Barot, Deputy Mayor Anju Shah, prominent leader Prerak Shah, MP Hasmukh Patel, MLA Amul Bhatt, and other office-bearers and social leaders, along with a large number of society residents and devotees. Later that day, Chief Minister Patel addressed a Youth Dialogue Programme where he spoke about innovation and entrepreneurship. He said that under the visionary leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, India's youth is scaling new heights in the fields of innovation and startups. He noted that unlike earlier times, the country now has a dedicated ecosystem and institutional support for startups, enabling young people to build ventures with confidence.
