Nepal’s Prime Minister Urges Global Climate Action, Proposes Himalayan Resilience Initiative at UNGA

From the UN General Assembly floor in New York, Nepal’s prime minister Balendra Shah thanked both India and China for the disaster relief they have extended to his country in recent months. He used the platform to emphasize that the Himalayan region, home to millions of South‑Asian migrants’ families, is increasingly vulnerable to climate‑related hazards such as flash floods and landslides.

Shah called for a heightened level of international cooperation on climate policy, arguing that the existing fragmented response is insufficient for a mountain range that straddles several nations. To address this gap, he floated the idea of a Himalayan Climate Resilience Mechanism, a joint framework that would be coordinated by the countries that share the range.
