Sikh Community in London Demands Justice After Henry Nowak Case
A high-profile legal case involving a kirpan-related defence has prompted London's Sikh community to speak out, with a leading advocacy group urging the government to examine the failures it says surrounded a young man's death.
⚖️ Sikh Federation Writes to Senior Ministers Over Nowak Killing
The Sikh Federation has called on the British government to launch a public inquiry into what it describes as serious failures surrounding the death of an 18-year-old student killed in Southampton in December 2025. The organisation's chief executive of political engagement has written directly to the Home Secretary, Justice Secretary and Attorney General, warning that misinformation about the murder weapon has been deeply damaging to Sikhs across the country. While the killer was wearing a small kirpan — a blade Sikhs are legally permitted to carry — the weapon used in the killing was separately identified by the trial judge as a large dagger, which the Sikh Federation and the Network of Sikh Organisations both say was not a kirpan but a historical Persian blade. Bodycam footage released by police with the family's permission showed the victim telling officers he could not breathe while restrained after being stabbed. A jury inquest into the broader circumstances of the death is scheduled for next year. [1]
