Rat Bites Off Part of Patient's Toe in Government Hospital Ward
A 70-year-old woman identified as R Tamilkodi, a resident of Alathur near Kalkandarkottai, lost part of her left big toe after a rat bit it while she lay in the post-operative ward of the Mahatma Gandhi Memorial Government Hospital in Tiruchirappalli. Tamilkodi had been admitted after sustaining an injury to her left ankle in a fall on July 20 and had undergone surgery at the facility. Her son Vijayakumar, who came to the ward on Thursday morning to bring her tea, discovered the injury and reported it to hospital staff. Medical personnel examined the wound, cleaned it, and administered tetanus and other preventive vaccines. Hospital officials stated that her vital signs remained stable and that she had not suffered serious side effects from the bite. Vijayakumar told reporters he had previously alerted hospital staff to the presence of rats in the ward but that no action had been taken. Because Tamilkodi is diabetic, she had been unaware that the bite had occurred. Justin Prabakaran, a 29-year-old seminarian from Amirpalayam in Virudhunagar district, was found dead in a room at Jeganmadha Church near K.K. Nagar in Tiruchirappalli in the early hours of a Wednesday. He had been undergoing formation for the Catholic priesthood for approximately eight years, with stages completed in Kolkata, Bengaluru, and Chennai. Those familiar with his situation said he had appeared emotionally distressed in the period before his death. Justin had recently come to Tiruchirappalli to undergo a routine medical examination required as part of his priestly formation programme. After completing the check-up, he briefly travelled to Bengaluru before returning to Tiruchirappalli on Tuesday night. Church personnel discovered him unresponsive in his room at around 5 a.m. and immediately alerted the police. Officers from K.K. Nagar Police Station responded and shifted the body to the Government Hospital in Tiruchirappalli, where a post-mortem examination was conducted. Following the autopsy, the body was handed over to his family and church authorities for the funeral. Police registered a case of unnatural death based on a complaint filed by A.
