Congress MP Warns Delimitation Bill Favours Central India Over Other Regions

Chandigarh, Aug 9 – In a statement to the Lok Sabha, Congress leader Manish Tewari expressed apprehension about the pending Delimitation Bill. Tewari argued that the proposed redrawing of electoral boundaries would disproportionately advantage states in Central India, while offering little benefit to the North, South or the Northeast regions.

The MP highlighted that the current delimitation exercise, slated to be undertaken after the 2026 census, could reshape the political map in ways that marginalise large swathes of the country’s population. He urged the government to consider a more balanced approach that reflects demographic changes across all zones, rather than concentrating gains in a specific belt.

For the South‑Asian diaspora, the debate matters because delimitation influences representation in India’s Parliament, which in turn affects policies on immigration, foreign investment, and diaspora engagement. A skewed allocation of seats could shift legislative priorities, potentially impacting overseas Indians who rely on India’s foreign policy and economic decisions.
