US PERM Halt Likely Soft on Indian IT Earnings; Pharma Margin Cap Set at 7%

Mumbai, Oct 9 – The United States has put a temporary freeze on Permanent Labor Certification (PERM) processing for several large Indian technology firms, including Tata Consultancy Services and Infosys. While the move initially raised concerns about hiring pipelines and revenue streams, Kotak Neo’s latest analysis suggests the impact on the overall corporate earnings of India’s IT sector will be marginal in the short term.
The bank points out that most of the revenue for these firms comes from existing contracts and services already in place, so the suspension is unlikely to cause an immediate dip in earnings. However, it could tighten the talent pipeline for future projects if the pause extends.
In a separate development, the U.S. has introduced a trade margin cap on pharmaceutical products, limiting it to 7 %. This ceiling is expected to affect pricing dynamics for Indian pharma exporters, potentially narrowing profit margins on U.S. sales.
For the diaspora, the news carries mixed signals: IT professionals may see a short‑term lull in new U.S. hiring, while pharma workers could face tighter pricing constraints. Both sectors remain vital sources of overseas employment and remittances, making these regulatory shifts worth monitoring.
